In the words of heroine Ellie Beecher, my parents were murdered on a Wisconsin farm in 1982--shot twice with a German Luger and their farmhouse set ablaze. I was only nine. My grandparents took me in and raised me like a daughter. I was extremely close to my grandfather, who died in 2008. You see, we shared a life and death moment together in 2006. It's been eight years since grandpa passed. I've needed each and every one of those eight years to put my life back on course. Now it's high time, for me to make good on a promise.
I am now fulfilling my vow to my grandfather. I told him someday, I'd write his story--a story so future generations do not forget about the vital role Lake Michigan played during WWII.This is the story of--The Battle for Lake Michigan. I now live on the 38th floor of a Chicago high-rise. Sitting on my ledge with my morning coffee, I look out to the lake and in the thinly veiled fog, I can see them just as they were in the 40's, just as grandpa used to tell me. Two aircraft carriers with their tall plumes of black smoke steaming north to rendezvous with the fighter planes from Glenview Air-Station. I glance down to the Chicago River and witness the crew of a submarine made in Manitowoc, Wisconsin clearing the Lakeshore Drive Bridge. They strain their necks to the tall buildings and wonder-- will we ever see this great city again?
When I tell my friends about these ships, their usual reply is-- I need to buy you a drink. My reply is no, and I'll you a drink and dinner, if you let me tell you the truth. The truth of 12,000 US Navy Pilots who trained on Lake Michigan, including one former President, George H.W. Bush. The truth of those twenty-eight Wisconsin submarines, who sailed down inland rivers to sink one-hundred and thirty-two Japanese ships.
